Hudson
United Soccer Club FAQ

What is Hudson United Soccer
(HUSC) about?
Hudson United Soccer Club is an organized non-profit
travel soccer league with NHSA, New Hampshire Soccer Association, licensed
coaches and a core of volunteers dedicated to Youth Soccer. We play within Granite State Youth Soccer
League (GSYSL) which is a conglomerate of over 178 teams through out New Hampshire.
We play soccer games against other town travel teams in
our general area. Our program
features outdoor soccer in both the fall and spring with one or two
practices during the week, a game on the weekend, and tournament play
during the season.
HUSC coaches are required to attend NHSA classes and
receive a state certification to train players. There are various levels needed for our
coaches to train at a younger age up to high school age. Our goal is to provide a quality soccer
experience by developing skills and an understanding of the game while
promoting good sportsmanship.
How does
travel (league) soccer differ from recreational soccer in general?
Our travel teams belong to
GSYSL (www.granitestatesoccer.com)
and play other town’s travel teams.
In recreational league, teams play within the town against other
town teams. The level of commitment
(time, effort, cost) and rewards (individual and
team skill development) within travel are typically more intense than
recreational league. Many travel
players start out in recreational soccer and move to a travel team for more
challenge, the opportunity to play more soccer, and develop over the years
with the same team. Players selected to play for HUSC are selected from a
tryout and not all players make an HUSC.
For recreational teams all players are selected. Even though selection is made from a
tryout kids do not need to be a soccer super star to play on our travel
teams. Commitment and the desire to
become a better soccer player are traits we look for.
What is
HUSC recreational program?
HUSC recreational program is
designed to give younger players an introduction to soccer in a consistent
manner to help develop their skills and more importantly to have fun while
doing it. The program is six weeks
of skills and games for younger players to be comfortable while progressing their skills. The first three weeks will be one set of
skills and games where the last three will be more advanced skills.
HUSC recreational program is
also designed to develop coaching.
Each team will have a parent coach and a HUSC coaching mentor (this
can vary depending on team numbers).
Part of the parent coach training will be a session where they will
go through the same training program as our players. On game day the HUSC
mentor will assist in running the practices and coaching the game.
HUSC recreational program is
for the spring season only and for ages 6,7,8 and
9.
When, how
long and what is involved in the HUSC soccer seasons?
HUSC fall outdoor season
ranges from early Sept to early Nov and a spring outdoor season from mid
April to mid June. While it varies a
bit by age groups and teams/coaches each season typically consists of two
practices, an eight week game season, and one tournament for the fall and
another for the spring. Some HUSC teams may practice only once during the
week especially for the younger players.
Practices are in the evenings and last 1-2 hours. In the fall
practices begin a few weeks before the season will start. In the spring practices will start when
field conditions are ready after the winter thaw.
When are
HUSC tryouts?
Tryout dates vary from year
to year. Generally there is a tryout
in early to mid-June for the fall/spring season and another tryout late
October or early November for the spring only season. Tryouts will be two nights. Players are encouraged to attend both
nights. You must attend at least one
practice to be considered for team selection.
How do I
best prepare for HUSC practices and games?
Be on time. Come 10 minutes before practice and 20
minutes prior to games. Wear your
proper gear, soccer cleats, shin guards, and bring a soccer ball, water,
sun screen, and HUSC uniform for games.
The night before games make sure your child gets enough sleep and
nutrition. Although young kids seem
to have unlimited energy, soccer is a physically demanding sport and proper
preparation is needed to play at their highest level.
What do I
do if I can not make a practice or game?
Everyone is busy and of
course there are unforeseen events that may conflict with soccer. As a rule of thumb, HUSC asks that you
make the commitment to your fellow teammates and coach. Please inform your coach if you can not
make a practice and especially a game. This information helps the coach to
better plan for practices or the games.
Coaches prepare ahead of time
for practices and what skills they intend to train the players. Their plans often are based on all
players participating. It becomes
difficult to change a practice plan at the last moment and takes away from
developing the players at that practice.
There are occasions where the
number of players on a team may be at the minimum. If players are not committed and do not
show up for games, this can cause a team to forfeit and cost HUSC a penalty
fee, or force a coach to play without subs which is unfair to the players.
What is
the age/playing format and costs for HUSC?
Following USYSL formats, GSYSL
and HUSC offers early development program (EDP) for U8 and U9 players and
competitive teams for U10 – U14.
HUSC EDP is for younger players to explore soccer with a focus on
skill development in a non-competitive 4v4 and 6v6 environment. Cost reflective below is for the Fall
2009/Spring 2010 season.
